What is the difference between bears balm and beard butter?

What is the difference between bears balm and beard butter?

, by Oriol Font, 1 min reading time

Good question! “Beard balm” and “beard butter” are both grooming products designed to condition, soften, and style a beard — but they differ in texture, purpose, and hold:

Beard Balm

  • Texture: Waxy and firm (similar to a light pomade).
  • Main Ingredients: Beeswax, shea/cocoa butter, carrier oils, essential oils.
  • Purpose:
    • Provides light to medium hold — helps shape and tame stray hairs.
    • Locks in moisture and protects the beard from dryness.
    • Works well for styling and controlling flyaways.

  • Best For: Medium to long beards where shaping and control are needed.

Beard Butter

BEARD BUTTER

  • Texture: Creamy, soft, and buttery (like whipped lotion).
  • Main Ingredients: Shea/cocoa butter, carrier oils, essential oils (usually little to no wax).
  • Purpose:
    • Deep conditioner for beard and skin underneath.
    • Focuses more on softening, nourishing, and moisturizing than on styling.
    • Absorbs quickly and reduces itch and dandruff.

  • Best For: Any beard length, especially short-to-medium beards or nighttime conditioning.

👉 Rule of thumb:

  • If you want styling + control → beard balm.
  • If you want softness + hydration → beard butter.
